2021 National Club Championship at Palm Springs Recap
The 2nd PGA National Club Championship took place this past December in Palm Springs, California with over 500 Men and Women club champions from all 50 states represented. Played on a rotation of 3 top tier courses in the area, PGA WEST Stadium Course, Indian Wells Golf Resort and Desert Willow Golf Resort, served as a paradise-like escape for December golf.
Over 200 Women’s club champions kicked off the tournament on December 4th and enjoyed some top notch weather with bright sun and temperatures in the mid 80’s. Split between three courses, the Women’s division started on PGA WEST Stadium Course with Ali Mulhall jumping out to an early lead with an impressive -3 round of 69. The Senior Women got things started on Desert Willow’s Firecliff Course with Dena Levy firing a -2 round of 70 while the Champion Women’s division was led by Janny Naylor on Indian Wells Celebrity Course. After 3 days of great competition, our champions for each division were crowned. Ali Muhlall went wire to wire winning the Women’s Division in impressive fashion with a 3 day total of 213 (-3). The Senior Women’s champion also went wire to wire as Dena Levy posted a 3 day total of 223 (+7) to take home the title. Robyn Puckett took over the lead after day two of the Champion Women’s competition and held on to finish 5 shots clear with a 3 day total of 225 (+9). The Men got started the following weekend with 320 champions over 3 divisions. With the weather shifting to more of a colder feel in the early mornings, that didn’t stop the impressive play. We saw 4 rounds in the 60’s in the Men’s division led by eventual champion Justin Bryant with a 66. This wouldn’t be the lowest round of his weekend. David Schlip joined in the sub 70 round fun as he lead the Senior division after round 1 with a -3 69. We had a 3 way tie after round one of the Champions division with Clifford Smith, Keith Bock and Michael Sadler posting rounds of 69. It ended up being a shootout in the Men’s division on the final day with Justin taking home the title with a final round 65 even with John Spellerberg making a late charge with a 64 to finish the tournament. Chris Boquette took home the Senior division title with a 3 day total of 210 (-6) while Clifford Smith and Dale Bouguennec were co-champions in the Champion’s division with an impressive 3 day total of 209 (-7). Weather on the final day prohibited a playoff to decide a champion. For final results and more information, check out the Men’s Championship page.
